Ogwen Cottage and the National Curriculum

All efforts are made to encompass areas of literacy and numeracy through our work at the Centre. The Journals provide an opportunity for pupils to express their experiences through the written word.

Activities including navigation and orienteering offer the opportunity to develop a variety of numeracy skills, and on the social side, purchasing from the Centre shop involves numeracy skills particularly in mental arithmetic!

You may use the Centres digital cameras and produce your own photographs for your Journal. This may have to be done on a group basis, the group can appoint one or two people to produce the work.

There is also a live communication system allowing you to link direct back to your school. If this facility is required please make sure that arrangements are in place prior to leaving the school to start the course.

Discovery is the key that opens the doors on a whole host of cross-curricular themes. Examples of areas that the staff cover during their daily activities include:

• Mountain Building processes / erosion
• Glaciation of an upland region
• Town and Country Planning
• Population - rural economy / community
• Town and Country comparisons
• River studies
• Coastal studies / the seashore
• Flora and Fauna
• Weather - Ogwen is a weather station for the met. office at RAF Valley
• Personal, social and citizenship development

These areas are the main focus of our work at Ogwen Cottage.

All the staff at Ogwen play key roles in making your week a success. Remember life is not a rehearsal. Work hard and communicate. Help each other and help the staff.
