Safety
'True safety is an attitude of mind, a way of life, it is a blend of confidence, competence and adaptability
in the handling of potential dangers and without causing unnecessary risk of physical or psychological harm.'

Terminology
Birmingham City Council Environmental and Outdoor Education Service is the official body which approves the
Centre and to whom the Head of Centre is directly responsible.
Staff
Head of Centre: The person having direct control and responsibility for the running of the Centre with a remit
to vet all social and adenture activities.
Deputy Head of Centre: In the absence of the Head of Centre, the deputy is expected to undertake full
responsibility for the running of the programme.
The Instructor/Leader: The person having direct control and responsibility for the venture in the field.
Visiting Staff with little experience: Party member who is not necessarily skilled or experienced in the
venture, but who can share responsibility within defined limits. Visiting members of staff are in
loco parentis.
Residential Commitment: All Ogwen staff are expected to undertake a residential role. As duty instructor their
responsibility starts at 9am and finishes at the same time the following day.
Responsibility
Everyone concerned with the Centre has some degree of responsibility to all the others
involved in and with the Centre.
Safety is paramount. If an activity is judged to beyond the ability of students it
should be abandoned.
